Question #1:
How can I control the damage?
About a year ago, I acquired–by means of inheritance–a large and exotic Sumatran orangutan, whom I nicknamed Morgue.A joyous creature of simple fancies, Morgue mostly sleeps and eats all day. He is allowed to roam free throughout the house–a liberty I sought to grant him as a token of appreciation for his good behaviour– and is generally on good terms with the servants.
Although quite pleasant most of the time, Morgue is no saint. When deprived of food–for whatever reason–he shrieks in anger and runs amok pelting mushrooms at the hired help, were this not enough, he sometimes proceeds to defenestrate tea cups and small spoons (the latter being, however, rare).
At first, these violent outbursts were a cause for alarm, nay, despair. As time went by however, the primate's rage fits became rarer and rarer, and for a long time, peace prevailed.
It was not until yesterday that during a violent storm, Morgue, neglected of strawberry tarts, erupted into a fit of psychotic rage and began pounding at lock on his cage with frightening force.
His attempt to break free was, alas, successful. Morgue armed himself with an old razor before anyone could contain him and, as I type, runs amok jabbing the servants; one of which, lies unconscious.
How can I secure my antiques and make sure Morgue causes no damage to the furniture?

Question #8:
Value of Eastlake style chairs?
About a month ago I purchased 1 Eastlake style side chair at an antique store in Maine. The one I bought was pair of two matching side chairs. I only got one & I felt really sad & guilty for breaking up the pair that several weeks later I drove 4 hours to go back to Maine to get the other chair.(I am very dedicated to my antique furniture. I believe that the chairs were part of a larger parlor set. I believe the chairs are walnut, a common wood for Eastlake furniture. The chairs were not in the vest condition but I could not pass up these beautiful chairs that need a little love & care. The tag in the chairs was $45 for one $80 for the pair. I also believe that they are stuffed with horsehair. They upholstery is very worn on one is torn on the bottom and very worn, both chairs are a little dirty. The current color of the upholstery is black/brown (it is hard to tell because they are dirty. On the back cushion they have buttons & somewhat tufted backs. I would like to know what the value of a chair like this would be in the current condition & after redoing the upholstery? Also, what is the reason for the little wheels or castors on the front of my and many other eastlake sidechairs. Please answer my questions if you can, your help is greatly appreciated. I am just a person who loves antiques & history and wants to know more. Again, thank you!Question #9:

Question #14:
Can you give me feedback on my novel?! (one page yet)?
I still remember the bold black iron bars of the gate, standing tall and towering above all beings. A cool midnight breeze brought me to my senses, and I suddenly took notice of the lad coming towards the gate. He was rather young, a junior of no more than 18, and he carried a chain of keys. The sound of a distant storm shook the earth and broke the silence. This only caused the porter to search more nervously through the keys to find the right one. The air was thick and moist, and his lantern was merely a halo in the dull grey sky, frosted with humid breath. Not a single sound was to be heard but the clinging of the rusty old keys.“Oh for god’s sake, son, get a move on...” said the loud voice of a woman coming towards us from behind. A short figure wrapped in covers, looking rather like a ball of wool, she was a woman of 40 who introduced herself as Mrs. Hamston as she pulled out a key, and pushing the boy away with her large figure, made way for herself and opened the lock, letting me in.
“Do accept my pardon, Mr. Turner! Henry was sent to us a week ago. Well, thank lord you are safe and sound. How was your journey?” said she, as she walked me along the garden towards the house. I followed her like a son following his mother, afraid of being lost in the foggy darkness.
“Glad to be settled at last, madam.” I said, looking up at the sky with inner frustration. Another roar of the clouds reminded us to keep walking in pace, and soon the icy drops of rain began to fall.
The humid atmosphere did not allow me to look around, and so I stared at my feet, and concentrated on the sound of my thick leather boots rustling on the wet pebbles. Finally, a halo of dim light caught my attention and here I lifted my head and found myself on the porch of the grand mansion; and a grand mansion it was. Its walls were tar black bricks, and the sides extended through the trees, out of sight. The stairs leading to the porch were of dark marble, paneled with wooden boards to avoid the slippery wet floor. Just then, my observations were interrupted by Mrs. Hamston, who now held the great wooden door open for me to enter.
“Come along now, Henry. Show Mr. Turner to the guestroom while I prepare the tea”; She then locked the door and walked away in her tiny steps, her skirt rustling away into the distance. As Henry went to attend to my luggage still left in the carriage, I had the instance to forget about the grandeur of the building outside, and be awed at the nevertheless luxurious interior. The floor was parquetted in rhombuses intersecting each other in different shades of rich glossy wood, covered with an antique crimson Persian carpet that ran to the foot of the grand staircase. The staircase was of rich, expensively carved oak, carpeted blood red velvet, and curved from the left side of the hall to the right, ending in a mysterious dimly lit hallway upstairs.
The door opened and a cool breeze sent me a slight shiver. Henry had my trunk and set forth, telling me with a silent look that I should follow him. I though we were headed upstairs, but instead, he led me straight ahead of the hall, and then turned towards a rather small door under the staircase. He put the trunk on the floor and started searching through his key loop again. Finally, he found the right one and turned the lock, opening the door to complete darkness. He then proceeded to an elegant table that sat outside the door next to the back door window, opened its drawer, and drew a match from a box, lighting the candle on the table. He returned to “my” room and without entering it, reached for a lantern hung on the inside wall, and lit it with the candle he had in his hand. The room was now visible with the lantern, and I stepped in, looking around. It was a large room as opposed to its tiny door, furnished with antique Victorian furniture. The floor was warmly carpeted, and there was a canopy bed on one side, a chair, a sofa, a study desk and the bathroom at the very end. There was nothing lacking, yet it felt unfamiliar to be standing among the nostalgic figures of the objects. I turned to Henry and thanked him, with the intention of asking about the electricity, but I would rather discuss that with the house keeper, and so I dismissed him. I took another look at the room, and then took off my coat and hat, and started unpacking my stuff on the bed. The closet, just like the room, was ironically spacious on the inside, whereas I thought I needed to find another place to hang the rest of my clothing. I then sat on the bed and looked around. There was much decorations and objects to see, much details to memorize. There was a painting of a lighthouse lost on the shore among the huge rocks, a painting of Scottish highlands and one of a bee farm, all aligned next to one another across the wall.
Question #15:
What color should I paint my bookshelf?
I just bought a used simple bookshelf. About 3 and a half feet high with 3 shelves. I was thinking of painting it white on the outside, but with purple shelves and backing. Or maybe cobalt blue outside with orange shelves. I want something funky. Most of my furniture is a mixture of antiques and wacky colored stuff, so the more unique, the better. Thank you!Question #16:
I'm looking for a Late 80's early 90's supernatural/ghost TV programme?
I can't find this fantastic TV programme anywhere. I think it may have been called 'Trap', but I could be wrong. It was not animated either. I know for definite that it was not the 'Friday the 13th' tv series, also from the late 80's and early 90's. The opening screen/credits had very eerie and spooky music, almost similar to most haunted minus the drums or beats. The opening credits also had what looked like furniture going into a vortex, and as I said was quite eerie, and it was very memorable too. As far as I remember It was set somewhere in Britain. Some of the episodes revolved around very old haunted antiques. I think there where two kids in it, a teenage boy and girl. Any help would be much appreciated, because I haven't seen this programme in years, and for all I know it could be on youtube.Question #17:
furniture finish won't come off.?
I have an old bed that I want to refinish. It's not a fine antique- maybe 50 or 60 years old 4 poster. I don't know what kind of finish is on there but no matter what I do I can barely penetrate it. The only thing that works is sanding it by hand. I have tried turpentine, alchohol, and three brands of furniture stripper. I have also tried wrapping aluminum foil over the stripper so it won't evaporate. I put the stripper on thick and wait 30+ minutes, then rub it off with steel wool and do it again 3-4 times. It barely makes a dent in the finish. Other than taking it to a furniture refinisher, which I'm about to do but can't afford it, does anyone have an idea about what the finish could be ( it just looks like dark brown paint) and what else I can try before I give up on this.Question #18:
Can I use regular mineral oil or cooking oil to prevent water from rotting my wood fence?
I understand that it is not common to use regular cooking oil to preserve the wood fence. However, before there are chemicals, people use oil to shine/preserve the "antique" furniture. Is there any reason that is wrong to use mineral oil/cooking oil?Question #19:
So much tension between the family due to what my son have been doing!?
A couple days ago, my husband was trying to find a tool to change his car oil. Since my son is the one who pretty much own every tools because he learned back in freshman that if he take in thing and fix it up, he can make profit from it. So he got to point where he’d do anything from fixing furniture, repairing electric items, and other things. He start to buying all kind of tools that he end up pretty much own every tools we have here and the garage. To his horrific he found a scuba hidden away especially since he has no lesson in scuba or anything that we know of. So he digs around a bit more and discovered a couple fake ids that look so real, bunches of knives, and two antique pistols.
When my son got home, we confronted him about everything. We found out he learned how to scuba on his own and do it couple time already, made fake id so he can work toward sky diving certificate and isn’t far from receiving it and wanted to get helicopter piloting license but cannot afford it, and he got antique pistols because he liked them and have no intention on using them out of fear of breaking it.
We know that he work a lot, often he’s in garage almost the whole time he’s home and would work until well past midnight then get up at 4 in the morning and make about $500 to 700 a month when school is in on average and anywhere between 1,000 and 1,500 a month since school was out. Also we know he shops very careful and always buy used items and fix them up if possible instead of buying brand new things.
We’re proud of him for that, but now that we found out he have been making fake id, buying antique pistols, learning sky diving, and going scuba on his own, this really scared us.
My husband wants to take pistols away until he turn 18, take the knives and scuba gear away, and let him get the certificate in sky diving then take the id away. He wants to have closer supervisor over what my son is doing.
I on other hand want to just get every tool out and sell them and keep only what my husband will need and use.
I feel like my son should lose the opportunity of having all those things and doing what he was doing to make money. But my husband says he doesn’t want to deal with my son asking for money all of the time since thing has been really tight for a while and that my son was just being a kid and could have done much worse if he wanted to, so a warning is enough.
This has been causing a lot of tension between everyone lately and my son is clinging to my husband’s side which isn’t helping at all! I don’t know what to do.
